Tho Governor-General and Lady Alice Fcrgusson, accompanied by Capt, Orr-Ewing and Miss Dugdale, arrived by special train at Timaru yesterday and left later for Mt. Cook Hermitage, where they will remain for ten days. The death is reported of Mr. John Lucas Read Bloomfield, aged 64, a ptvominent Auckland resident. A Loudon cable states that Sir Halt Caine, the novelist, has been ordered abroad forthwith. He is suffering from loss of memory.
Professor Peren has returned from Wellington where he has been attending the annual meeting of the Academic Board of the University of New Zealand. Mr F. Heaton, M.A., B.Sc., who has been in charge of the science classes at Dannevirke High School for a number of years, has been granted a year’s leave of absence prior to his perman" ently resigning his position because of ill-health.
Ax last evening’s annual meeting of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School Old Boys’ Association, reference was made to the good work carried out by the retiring secretary (Mr L. Pickering). It was unanimously resolved that tho Association’s appreciation of Mr Pickering’s work be recorded on the minute book.
