TEPID BATHS

LIFE-SAVING SOCIETY SUBMITS ITS SCHEME. At Monday evening’s meeting of the executive of the Manawatu branch of the Eoyal Life-Saving Society, a comprehensive scheme for tepid baths was submitted by Messrs. W. C. Collier and A. D. Campbell, who had been deputed at the previous meeting to bring down a definite proposal for discussion. The schemes submited and approved, was as follows: Financial Costs. “The total caj/tal expenditure on the baths according to the municipal handbook, is £4535. The proposal to mala the bath tepid and roof it over should not involve more than £ISOO additiona. expenditure; the total capital expenditure, therefore, would be in the region of £6050. The annual expenditure cai be estimated as follows: Wages of custodian, £1 per week, £52; male assistant at £4 18s, £254 16s; light, power, and heating water, £300; repairs and supplies, £SO; miscelleaneous expenditure, £2O; interest on capital at 51 per cent, (as loan), £332 IQs; depreciation first vear at 5 per cent., £316 16s Jd; total,'£ls26 2s 9d. Revenue at the rate of £IOO per four weeks would tieally a'certainty, providing that a thorough effort was made to bath a popular meeting place for sports bodies. . . 4 4 The guarantees would require to be a continuous change of water, or a com? plete change of water once a day; accommodation for sports bodies; ipore carnival accommodation and equate system of lighting, and admission for schools at special rates per class. We should urge that artesian water be used for the baths. 'The water appears more tempting and is easier kept pure by means of a suitable chlorine plant, and it does not require filtering. The municipal baths at Christchurch are supplied from a bore at the rate of 300 gallons per minute, and a 24in. to 3iik. bore here would supply that quantity-. An Urgent Need.

4 4 The baths should provide slipper baths, which are a, productive source of revenue: ‘No addition need be considered for he)p in the office, as all the calculated-office work would be done by the'Council office staff. Upon the basis above, the baths are warranted and tha need of a rapidly growing town demands some better municipal provision in this.* regard. Further data can be supplied for the purposes of a depufa tion, but we feel, that there is|a lot of work for each member to do in gaining the synry.thy of kindred bodies, and we should leave no stone unturned to sep that the athletic bodies of tha town get behind to see that a sunt is placed upon the estimates to proyids the improvements we suggest.” Mr.. Collier stated that tho Christchurch tepid baths were a credit to that city and were well patronised* H tho baths were up-to-date, the positioa would be the same in Palmerston North, and there was every possibility of the Now Zealand championships being held here.

On the motion of Mr. Campbell, it was decided to circularise all sport* bodies in the town, asking their cooperation in the mattei-, which will be again fully discussed at a future general meeting. A deputation from this representative meeting of sports bodies will then wait upon the Borough Council.
