FIXTURES.

October 11,13 —Dunedin Jockey Club. October 13—Mastorton Racing Club. October 20, 22—Wellington R.C. October SO, 24—Waikato Racing Club. October 22—Waverley Racing Club. October 22—North Canterbury E.C. October 25, 27 —Poverty Bay Turf Club ' Star Stranger was an equine picture when paraded for the Mitchelson Cup. He is very forward, and those ■ who fancy his chance in the New Zealand . Cup need have no fear about his condition. He has never been so for- , ward at this time of the year, and .it , is to be regretted that he did not get a run on Saturday, for he would have . been very troublesome for ail his 9.12. Staf Stranger should be at the top of • his fern} this year, and play a prominent part in all the important hand!- ■ caps. (| Commendation looked very bright ■and well, and as quiet as a sheep off •his owner's station as he was led ■ round the bird cage at Ellcrslio on Saturday prior to the start of the Shorts ■Handicap. To the general amazement’ when he was taken to the barrier, his antics suggested his ability to qualify for Gene Turincy’s crown. He reared ’up on his hind legs and struck out -with his forefeet iu quite the best style. L. G. Morris applied the whip vigorously and the Limond gelding gave a fair bucking exhibition and f Wore rearing. Finally Morris settled ’him down and he faced the barrier quietly enough, but immediately it was released whipped right round and took

no part in tho race. Naturally Mr. W. H. Gaisford and George Jones were disappointed, but with L. G. Morris in the saddle and some more discipline he might bo made to settle down again. Possibly it was , unfortunate that the Ellcrslic course was selected for Commendation's reappearance, for it was there he showed his llrst waywardness and was not well treated on that occasion. Horses undoubtedly have long memories. ■; A Fit Horse. Whether Laughing Prince, would have won the Mitchclson Cup from the full field or not is a question that will never be settled,*but ho was a very fit horse on Saturday, and as tho race was run it would have taken a good one to beat him. It was really a canter round, and then a sprint home, so that with S.lO the Australian-bred horse had matters to suit him. Had all tho field run the race probably would have solidly run from cud to end, and some of the proved stayers found him out. As it was, tho chestnut won handsomely, and he has been a very profitable investment for Mr. T. A. Duncan. Oration caught even his owner-train-er (E. George) napping at Ellerslie on Saturday when ho beat Paganolli home in the Shotts Handicap, paying a big dividend. At early morning work he has been almost too sore to gallop, but in the actual race he began as well as 1 anything and raced probably the most brilliant sprinter in New Zealand. Oration responded well to punishment in the straight, for

whon tlie Waikato apprentice, K. Gill, applied the u hip.-Oration left Paganelli, and, sticking to ins work like a Trojan, won by n good length. Oration at one time was a suspected rogue, but this performance gave that: idea' the lie direct. Eleven applications were received for the position of handicapper for the Spring Meeting of the Porbury Park Trotting Club at last night’s meeting of the club. The names were reduced to two, T. Fogg (Dunedin) and G. Paul (Auckland). A ballot resulted in a dead heat, and the chairman gave his casting vote in favour of Mr. Fogg. Messrs. WrightJ Stephenson, and Co. have sold the two-year-old filly Francolin, on account of Mr. lan Duncan, to Mr, E. M. Greensladc, of Dunedin. She will race in her new owner’s colours iu the M'Lcau Stakes at the Dunedin Meeting to-morrow. NORTHLAND TROTTING CLUB’S HANDICAPS. AUCKLAND, Oct. 9.
