OROUA COUNTY

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Oroua County Council met ■ at Feilding yesterday, Cr, A. Campbell presiding. There were also present Councillors O. McElroy, W. Grecnhow, R. MacDonald, A. B. Shannon, W. McLennan and L. Green, Correspondence, i From Main Highways Board forwarding £B6B 17s 6d for maintenance on highways.—Received. The Board forwarded a copy of the amended Motor Vehicle Regulations, with proposals for the setting up of an Advisory Board to deal with various motor vehicle accessories.—Received.

From the Wellington Hospital Board requesting support to the proposal to dispose of four flags by raffle brought to New Zealand in the Southern Cross.—Tho chairman said that had tho proposal applied to the Wellington Province he would have no hesitation in supporting it, but since it was confined to the City of Wellington, he did not think tho Oroua County could assist. The Council agreed with this view and the letter was merely received.

From tho Manawatu Gorge Board of Control, forwarding cheque for the Council’s share of unexpended loan money and advising that a deputation recently waited on the Government requesting that tho road be taken over as a national highway. A further letter submitted an estimate of the maintenance expenditure for tho year 192829 and asked for the Council’s share amounting to £52 Bs.—Cr. McElroy said that if the Government did not take over the road right away, the matter should not bo allowed to drop. If any road should be a national highway, it was the Gorge road. The Government had been very unsympathetic to the Counties over this road. The chairman pointed out that the Government had tar-sealed the road without, cost to the local bodies. It was agreed to find tho maintenance and to withhold further action until the receipt of an official reply to the recent deputation. From Mr. E. Prentice, Ashhurst, agreeing to accept £lO in settlement of his claim in payment for certain work done to the Council’s grader.—Referred to the chairman and engineer to deal with. From Mr. C. Rodgers, Halcombe, requesting permission to fence in a portion of a road at Halcombo. —Referred to Cr. McLennan and engineer. From Mr C. F. Bailey and others, asking that repairs be carried out to Root street. —The engineer reported that the work had been done. Bate 8011. The following alterations were made on the County Rolls: Alex. F. Molliaon to W. J. Rogers; A. S. Young to Misses', M. W. and M. J Stewart; Jessie Short to V B- Short; F. Prentice to A. E. T. Smith. Treasurer’s Report. • Total rates levied £14,795; collected to date £2483, outstanding £12,311. Total three years’ outstanding rates at 31/3/28, £llßs, arrears collected to date £37, amount outstanding (Native and Crown Lands) £1147. Riding accounts.—Western (dr.), £1908; eastern (dr.), £2426. Bank balances.—County Fund Account (dr.) £6346. Highways Loan Account (dr.) £363. Engineer’s Report. The engineer’s report on the eastern riding is as follows: —Gravel repairs had been carried out on side streets at Ashhurst, old Napier and Grove road. Removing some of the sharp bends on Watershed road had been put in hand. A dump of gravel approximately 220 yards had been carted out of Mangaone stream at Bunnythorpe. This would be required principally for Bunnythorpe and Stonoy Creek roads. Graders had been at work continuously, particular attention' being given on tho main roads. Western riding,—Grav'd repairs had been carried out on tbe portion of Rou Reau road from tho Waituna Stream to Makino road. This section had also been trimmed with tho grader. On the new formation a couple of small slips had been removed and all culverts cleared. One new concrete pipe culvert had been put in on Tokorangi road and tho pipes had been delivered to replace an old 2ft. wooden culvert near Mr Page’s property. The roller had been at work on tbe Feilding and Haicombe road, Makino and portion of Tokorangi road. Pino crushed gravel had been delivered on to Kimbolton road (full length) Feilding-Halcombe road as far as Swamp Creek bridge andportion of Makino road. Portions of Kimbolton road were being scarified reformed and rolled. Gravel repairs, had been carried out to Root street.
