159th ANNIVERSARY OF COOK’S LANDING
Ceremony at Kaiti
WHERE NAVIGATOR FIRST SET FOOT

GISBORNE, Oct. 8. Representatives of public bodies and & largo gathering of public attended at the Cook memorial on Kaiti beach yesterday afternoon to celebrate the 159th anniversary of the landing of Captain James Cook. A short religious service was followed by speeches honouring the great navigator and by placing wreaths on the monument. Reference was made to the fact that the ceremony was taking place on the actual site where Captain ; Cook first set foot on New Zealand soil. Mr. J. R. Kirk, who presided, read a message from the chairman and council of the Royal Colonial Institute, associating themselves with the honour paid to the memory of Cook, and also messages from the Prime Minister, Hon. K. F. Williams and the Returned Soldiers ’ Association. A stirring address was delivered by Dr. Mcllraith.
