Beau Cavalier, hot favourite for tbe Grand National Steeplechase, > arrived at Eiccarton on Tuesday from Wellington, and was ,out yesterday morning on the track doing steady work. Last year'S. Tooman, trainer of Beau Cavalier, declared; that his horse was unbeatable with a stand up in the Grand National Steeplechase. He was right, too.' While recognising the increased 'poundage, he is again confident that the gelding'; will ,• put up . a great race in next month’s event. W. Bowden is to have the mount. - If-is not intended to give the gelding much schooling of a strenuous nature before the race, but he will be taken , over the course by Bowden a few days before the mcet- ‘ in".. When Beau Cavalier arrived at

HMh w "

Trentham from Ellerslio it was found that his tail was broken. At first lie gave his trainer a good deal of afixiety, but the injury is now healing rapidly. Henderson Without Bide. S. Henderson was engaged some time ago to pilot Glendowie in tho Grand National Steeplechase, so the connections of Beau Cavalier had to secure the services of W.' Bowden for the cross-country . event. Now that Glendowic has been withdrawn from the National Steeplechase, Henderson is left without a mount, hut ho will bo on his old favourite, Beau Cavalier, in the Grand National Hurdle Race. Shares Favouritism. Pouri, who shares favouritism for the big Steeples with Beau Cavalier, is getting sufficient work at Te Rapa to keep him in trim for his engagements at the Grand National meeting next month. This-member Of J. P. Tutchen’s team looks greatly improved as the result of his successful outing in the Wellington Steeplechase, and he will have a big following when he undertakes his next campaign in the south, where he will again have E. Warner to pilot him. Although it is big country at Eiccarton, Pouri should handle it, says a Waikato exchange. ■■ .Kamni Misses Noms, It is most unfortunate that the Grand National iiominalio'ns were overlooked by Kawini’s party, for the gelding, was fast coming into his own, ns his success on tho final day .’at Trentham showed. There is no' steeplechase suitable for Kawini now-till the Onehunga Steeplechase at the Ellerslie spring meeting .held early in October. Lysander, to Prepare. W. Bayner intends bringing-Lysand-; cr into work again at Wanganui in a fortnight,’s time. The son' of Absurd •—Pennon- has*put on a lot of condition during his spell. He has been hacked about the station for a couple of weeks and his trainer anticipates that the son of Absurd should be forward enough to bo given a race at the Wanganui spring meeting probably in the Eclipse Stakes. Mask Also. v , There is a probability, of Mask being a runner in tho Eclipse Slakes. Though

bis best performances have been registered over longer courses, the son of Limond —Cowl has shown that he can run a very fast mile on the tracks. May Do Better This Season. Gasnapper, the rising four-year-old son of Gasbag and Kidnapper, showed promising form in the autumn, running some good races, though without securing a win. He has been taken up again at llawera aftpr a spell and the r-hanccs are that he will do well during the coming season. Gasnapper is one of Mr. Conway’s team, and he also has four others in work at present, including tbo coming three-year-olds Caloput and a Tree Lucerne filly. San Per* and Glengariff complete the team. Tho latter is likely to do well over the hurdles in the coining season.May Yet Go To Sydney. • s A decision should bo conic to-within a few days as to whether Bright Glow is to bo taken to-Sydney or not. The Day Comet marc is in good order to begin a serious preparation, and, if she goes, to Australia, she should give a good account of herself in. the Epsom, Handicap. In Great Condition. Gold Dawn, the full-sister to Bright Glow, is also in ‘great condition to start the season’s preparation and W. Mantle should, pick up a race or two with her in the spring, as she can gallop all right, Hynanna for Sydney. Several days ago the connections of Hynanna fwero undecided whether tho gelding would'fulfil his .spring engagements in the Commonwealth, but it is now stated that the- Hymcstra gelding will make the trip do Randwick this week, and that he - will' be accompanied by his rising four-year-old stable-, mate Thnrnbclle (Thurnham—Bello of New York), who wall contest the minor handicaps. Hynanna, who is rising; five, is one of the Dominion’s best handicap performers, and the easy way in which he/disposed of tho opposition in the Great Autumn Handicap at Eicearton - stamped him as a . first-class performer. . liochson Back on Tracks. Loohson made his reappearance on the New Plymouth track last week. Tho ; bid, fellow looks 'well and his douiitful leg appears quite right. If he were only back to his old form wnat a job he would make of some- of tho hurdlers in commission at present. • Dishonoured’s First Win.. Dishonoured, who woii the Maiden race at Gisborne yesterday, is one of J. H. Jefferd’s team. This three-year-, old gelding by Paper • Money out of. Impediment had previously. started on three occasions for three seconds, each/

lime being beaten by a narrow margin. Hence it is no wonder he was a warm public, fancy at Gisborne yesterday. Sister to Agrion. Mr., W. Scholium, who raced Koyal Blood and Euapapa successfully, now trains his own "horses. White Wings .is recognised as the elect of the stable where classic events are concerned, and it is expected that sho will make her debut in September in the Avondale Guineas. Agrion’s sister is in steady work just now, and looks a picture of health and condition (says a northern exchange). Providing nothing intervenes, sho will bo gradually sharpened up, so that when required to accept for early engagements she will be at concert pitch. -> Chairman Disqualified! For some time there has been talk in certain ' quarters. in New Zealand about the' whereabouts of Chairman, a horse who raced principally in this Auckland province and got. his name from the. fact that his owner, Mr. R. C. Wallace, was, and still is, chairman of tile Auckland Hospital Board. From Queensland conics the following: A sensation has been caused in Western Queensland by the disqualification of well-known stationy, people over the running of a horse known as Red Fortune.'..: As -a result ; rof -inquiries, the stipendary steward on July 9 disqualified for life E. J. M. Peglcr, for many years'inanager of.Lungra Station, and Kobdrt Ward, of Quilpic, owner and trainer of the gelding. Red Fortune, who is said to bo identical with the New Zealander Chairman, by Nassau from Culross. The horse was. also disqualified for life. -A decision regarding John Watson, jun., who rode the gelding,-; was reserved. ,: - .

Limerick and Co. Depart, : F. D. Jones left Eiccarton yesterday for Wellington, on his way to Sydney. Limerick, ' Eoscrea and Gay Crest, three ‘of his team, were given short sprints at Eiccarton ‘on' Tuesday.' The fourth member, Arikiwai, was not galloped, but Jones is satisfied with his condition and he is definitely booked for the trip. Lightlreartel is also being taken across by.- Jones, - who will hand the gelding over to his new owner on his arrival in Sydney. Auckland Stakes Smaller.

The committee of the,Auckland Racing Club held-a special meeting pn Tuesday afternoon, when the programme for next season’s racing ,at Pllcrslie was decided. The stakes--to bo given will amount to £OI,OOO which is £2OOO less than this season, but still several thousand ■ pounds above that .which is required by the Rules of Racing. ' ' . . It was I decided to revert to eight races per -day at the spring meeting, and two new events have been added.
