EXPRESSING THOUGHTS IN LLsE AND COLOR SOUGHT TOR IN SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENTS WASHINGTON. The school child should bo taught to express' his thoughts just as freely in lines and color as he is in language, speakers told the convention of the American Federation of Arts, in session here. Royal B. Farum, director of art education in Massnchuctts, presided over the discusison of “Art in the Schools." To enrich living for all children, ana to devise machinery for discovering and training talented boys ■ and girls are the objectives of art education in the public schools, declared Henry T. Bailey,, director of the Cleveland School ’of Art; and former editor of the School Arts Magazine. When nature study in the schools is taught from the point of view of the artist rather than from that of the natural scientist it will bo found to be a source of perennial enjoyment, ho said. Arrangements which have been made
with the Cleveland school whereby’ crcdit'is given for courses taken in thcr art school were explained by Mr. Bsiloy. "We teach our students that the only competition should bo with ourselves. Then we learn that wo shall grow and be happy," ho concluded. - The important role which the er of art plays in education was*, stressed by C.' Valentino 'Kirby,, direc-. tor of art, Department, of Public Instruction of Philadelphia. A ' highstandard must be maintained' by the teachers of our "Potential producers and consumers of art," ho maintained. Educational activities carried on by tho Metropolitan Museum of Art were, explained by Huger Elliott, education-• al director of the museum.
