SHIPPING CONFERENCE URGES.

The delegates of 14 nations at the closing session of . the international shipping conference adopted a resolution urging the United States Government to' operate the Panama Canal continuously instead of eight hours daily as at present. • Ira A. Campbell of Ncw_ York, general counsel for the American Steamship Owners’- Association, in introducing the resolution, declared that the column of traffic through the canal now justifies a day and night service. “The traffic has grown to such a degree,” he said, “ that it is resulting in expensive delays for • ships, and the canal should be open at all times, except when it is necessary to close it for maintenance and repairs.” A. P. Holier, of Denmark, seconded the motion, and it was quickly passed.
