GOLF

The Manawotu Golf Club’s team that played tho Ranui Golf Club for tho Nathan Cup this week-end had to suffer defeat. Ranui winning by six matches to three —one match being halved. The visiting team gave two reasons for their defeat—the major reason being that the home players were playing too well for them—tho other reason being that the Ranui golf course was very heavy as compared with the Hokowhitu links. The team report that they were most hospitably entertained, and enjoyed lovely weather and most pleasant games. They had rather a trying experience returning home, as, when they reached tho Paikdkariki hill‘they found there was a big slip, which necessitated their turning round and going back to Wellington, and coming up over, the Rimutakas—so that it was getting oh for midnight before they arrived back in Palmerston. It has been practically arranged that anbther match should bo played on Saturday, 20th October, that being tho Saturday immediately before tho Manawatu annual tournament, and tho Ranui Golf Club most sportingly offered to bring up the Cup and allow it to be played for on the Hokowhitu links—waiving their right to

their own links. The following is the result of the match just played—Ranui being mentioned first in each case:— R. Gibbin lost to L. M. Abraham: A. Moore beat Colonel "Whyte; J. Colvill beat H. Chapman; S. Pain beat B. Keillor; H. McLean beat R. B. Lucas; R. Duneau halved with H. Seifert; A. Todd beat R. A. Douglas; D. Richmond lost to J, Taylor; J. Gibson beat EL Petre; S. Gibson lost to N. S. Buist. A largo number of members have signified their intention to go to Napier for the match next Saturday, the 28th. Any other members who wish to go should notify the hon. secretary at once. T. H. Horton, cx-amatcur champion of New Zealand and one of the finest ■ exponents of tho game the Dominion has produced, was a visitor to Palmerston North .over the week-end and ■ showed a glimpse of his quality by doing a 74 at Hokowhitu.
