250-MILE SWIM ALONG RHINE R. TO COLOGNE
CONTINGENT LEASE BASLE. OTHERS FOB OTHER PARTS. United Service. Received Monday, 5.5 p.m. GENEVA, July 22. Twenty thousand swimmers of both sexes started to swim from different parts of Germany along' rivers Rhine, Saar, Neckar, and Moselle to Cologne, where a German athletic and gymnastic meeting will bo held. , A contingent left, Ba?Je. on Saturday and carried a casket containing greetings from tho committee of the Swiss national gymnastic fete, at Lucerne. A doctor-in a motor launou accompanies the swimmers. The distance from Basle to Cologne by river is 250. miles. A Cologne message states that 12,000 clubs with a total membership of 2,000,000, including representatives from Germany’s lost colonies, will comthe gymnastic meeting there. Some 130 special trains had already conveyed visitors, hundreds of .whom had to sleep in the open air, owing to lack of accommodation.
