FEILDING NOW LEAD G. and C. CUP COMPETITION

Old Boys Defeated Kia Toa Win Easily

Little Change Made in Junior Championship The majority of Saturday’s Rugby results were true to form, although the sound defeat of Old Boys by Feilding no doubt provided a nasty jolt for the supporters of the blacks. This last was a patchy game, with little combined open work and a great deal" of hard battling among the forwards. At one stage Old Boys’ chances of annexing the championship points looked bright, but in the second spell, Feilding held a pronounced advantage to win' out, ,16—-9. Kia Toa took a trip to Feilding where they had a comfortable win over the Feilding colts, 12—3. Athletic drew the bye and took a rest cure for.the day. ■ , / u The position of the leading teams in the junior competition is unaltered, Old Boys, Kia Toa, and Feilding, all securing their championship points. - v

The meeting between Feilding and' Old Boys on the Showgrounds was remarkable for the. second spell recovery , of the yellow and blacks rather than any especial merit in the football., In the first spell, the honours were fairly oven, Old Boys having slightly the better of matters and holding a nine point advantage at half-time. Feilding, however dominated the second spell very distinctly, and succeeded in running up sixteen points, while their opponents were unable to make any addition to their first spell tally. The teams lined out as follows: — Feilding;—Boddy, Bowler, Conrad, Pike; Lynch, Simpson, C. Hight, A. Waldin, Stevens, G. Darragh, H. Darragh, E. Darragh, Eicc, Kelly, Eoaeh. Old Boys:—Norris, O’Shea, Williamson, McDowell, Akuira, Eiddell, Evans, Lancaster, Neild, Greig, Sutherland, Fox, Guy, Tremewan, Linklatcr, Feilding set the ball in motion, but Old Boys immediately compelled a force down as the result of some fast following by Evans. A free kick to Feilding saw the yellows swing into action, only to be held up by Norris stemming Eicc’s rush. Old Boys Open. Old Boys forwards drove through the opposition while Akuira, securing, sidestepped his way through the press, to pass in to Tremewan who immediately transferred to Fox. The big lock,

The spell opened very raggedly but Feilding, despite a succession of penalties against them soon .got down to business. ,’A loose forward .attack saw Waldin secure and smash through to transfer to George Darragh who raced over to score beside the posts. He had no difficulty in converting his own try. Old Boys 9, Feilding 5. y Old Boys counter-attacked hard both i fore and aft, the yellows being compelled to-force in the corner to obtain re-| lief. Straight back came Feilding in a solid thrust up the line, which saw j Hight battle up into the corner. From the resulting set-to, Bowler ' obtained possession to throw himself over, wide out. G. Darragh made a valiant attempt to convert but found the angle too much for Mm. Old Boys 9, Fending 8. • , ; In Old Boys come-back following Feilding’s sudden recovery, Sutherland received, an injury to'his shoulder and had to go off. '• Feilding were much more enterprising than in the first spell, their loose forward tactics worrying the blacks considerably. An exchange of high kicks, however, saw Lancaster field a high one from E. Darragh in great style, and, transferring to Akuira, participate in a fine loose rush which nearly saw Guy go over. The Feilding forwards re-asserted themselves at this stage, and droye the blacks into their own territory. A solid melee setting in Norris was caught out of position, and Williamson, missing, the bounce of a short kick, Boddy materialised out of the ruck to fall over over and put Feilding two points ahead. G. Darragh’s kick was charged down. Feilding 11, Old Boys 9. Feilding’s Superiority. A period of solid Feilding attack sot in, only relieved by two very welcome penalty kicks. A strong run down the line by E. Darragh saw a number of the Old Boy defenders badly beaten, aud the Feilding winger, ably backed up by Boddy, go very near a try. The outbreak was dealt with just in time however, and blacks forced play back to half-way again. Feilding were, nevertheless, definitely holding the ascendancy, until a fine short punt and fast following by Williamson, saw

using, his weight to advantage, smashed through the opposition to score in a handy position. Akuira’s kick was a shade , astray. Old Boys, 3-nil. It was not long before Old Boys were once again knocking at the door, their backs gaining with a nice passing bout, that saw the latter go as far as O’Shea. The winger was crowded for room, however, and Slung a wild pass in to his supports. A .Feilding.. infringement from the 'ensuing ‘ ruck, saw :/■ Akuira given a chance tp; pilot a splendid kick over the bar: < Old Boys, 6-hil. ■ ,/ Old Boys continued to hammer away, Lancaster following fast,' to catch Eoaeh napping when hq, missed a high kick., In the resulting scuffle, the black rover was clearly obstructed by Eoaeh, and the referee awarded Old Boys, an obstruction try.' The kick was not taken Old Boys 9-nil. , > ; * • • For the first time during the game, Feilding'became' dangerous,., their forwards ! staging a savage, thrust, which had Old Boys scrummaging right on their line.” There were many holes in both sides, at this stage, play being very ragged. Feilding, in their turn were nearly .caught napping by some fast following, work from O ’Shea. The opposing full backs were both tried and found wanting in. the last five minutes of the spell, which ended without fur-’ ther score, 9-nil in Old Boys’ favour. '.-'-‘Second-Spell. '• ..

Roach beaten and the Old Boys ’ centre take a flying dive over in the corner.. The hopes of the blacks' supporters, were abruptly dashed, however, when he was brought back, it being ruled that the ball had gone out behind. Feilding forced Old Boys to their defences again, very soon, their packmen keeping the blacks hard on the ropes. The yellow and blacks had not completed their entry upon, the score board either, and in a movement the tide of the attack was sweeping round the posts. Norris, in a valiant attempt to relievo was caught in possession, for G’ Darragh to secure and go down on the leather underneath a press of forwards He converted his own try to make the score 16—9 in Feilding's favour, when the final whistle sounded. Mr H. McGregor controlled the game. Midget Competition. The Midget competition was advanced a further stage last Saturday, Hokowhitu and College Street securing a bloodless draw. As usual the antics of the youthful players were followed with close attention and amusement. Both teams showed , a good knowledge of football, tackling being a strong feature. Mr. E. E. Hatch used wise discretion in controlling their youthful enthusiasm. ;' ' y ; MANAWATtJ JUNIORS TO PLAY HOEOWHENUA.
