Recently a strange bird was secured in the Korakonui district, states the Auckland Herald’s Te Awaihutu correspondent, and as its identity caused controversy among local spertsmeh the body Was sent to the Auckland Acclimatisation Society for identification. The reply states that the bird was a swamp quail of Tasmanian quail. It is similar in appearance to the Australian quail ,only .larger. The Upper part, of the body is finely barred grey, black and chestnut; the under part a buffy grey, with zig-zag black bars. The bill is blue, tipped with black, and the eyes orange. The : -size, from tip of bill to tip of tail in the adult bird is BJin. It is ’ considered strange that the Tasmanian quail is reported in the Waikato for the Auckland Society has never imported any, and has no information that other societies have done so. This bird is not found in any great numbers and when seen is often confused with : the Australian brown quail. - 1 -c-.;
