BIG GATES RATHER THAN THE GAME, IS OBJECTION TAKEN
‘COMMERCIALISED RUGBY’
MASTERTON’S MAYOR SUGGESTS RANFURI/X SHIELD BE DROWNED
Per Press Association. MASTERTON, Last Night. Regarding his message to Christchurch about dropping the Ranfurly Shield overboard, Mr T. Jordan, Mayor of Masterton, himself an old foot-, bailer who played in all grades of Rugby from fourth to senior A representative, explains that what he objects to is the subordination of. the playing of the game, to the team touring, spectacular rep, matches, and big gates.
Rugby, he said, is a game to be played, and the measure of Its success is to be gauged by the number of men playing it. The game IS being commercialised. There have boon 'no regular senior games in Wairarapa since Juno 30th. My point is that it is not right to shut down the competitions at such at early stage in order to go chasing that shield. ; .=
Among the' telegrams of- congratulations received ,by tho Wairarapa te preservatives at Christchurch bn Wednesday was ono from tho Mayor of Mastcrton, in which ho made the suggestion that the Shield, should be dropped overboard on tho trip to Wellington.,’ *
