"BARE-FACED FRAUD"
SEED AND PIG POTATOES. An unusual prosecution was heard at tho Feilding Magistrate ’s Court yesterday before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., when James Henry Pooley, market gardener, of Rongotea, was convicted under the regulations relating to fair packing of fruit and vegetables of *1927, made under the' provisions of the Orchard and Garden Diseases Act 1908 and 1914. The charge related to having exposed for sale at Mr. P. P. Stevens auction mart a sack of potatoes ,in a manner which failed' l to fairly represent the maturity and condition of the whole of. the contents of the sack. Mr. J. W. Whelan, inspector, said: "This is a case of bare-faced fraud. The top of the sack was packed with .a good sample of seed potatoes and was bought at auction by Mr. Sandbrook for 6s. But when opened the sack was three-parts full of pig potatoes. The sack was Teturned and a prosecution instituted.”,
The defendant said that it was a mistake that had been responsible'for the particular sack of potatoes being brought into the auction mart. The Magistrate imposed a fine of £1 and costs.
