A penalty that was unwittingly inflicted on farmers wlio assist their neighbours with their tractors is to be removed by legislation which, will be brought forward this . session. As the law now stands, the use of the highway for the short distance between farms renders tho owners of the lorry liable for a contractor’s license fees and also may debar him from obtaining a refund in respect of the vehicle. The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. K. S. Williams, advised the House yesterday in reply to a question by Mr. A. M. Samuel (Ohinemuri) that it was proposed to deal with the matter by legislation this session.
While walking in Kangitikoi street yesterday morning an elderly man named Thomas Montague, of 34 Taonui street, 89 years of age, slipped and in-, jurod a foot. He was removed to the’ hospital for X-ray examination and treatment.
At a meeting of tho .Colley Street School Committee on Tuesday evening, hold in conjunction with tho ladies’ committee, the secretary, Mr. 0. S. Pecs, reported that tho recent school ball had realised the sum of £25 3s Bd. This sum is to be applied towards the purchase of a piano. Votes of thanks were passed to all who had in any way assisted with the ball.
