The well-known axiom “Possession is nine points of the law,” may 'be translated in •‘football to read “Possession is nine points of a score.” Rongotca last Monday gave a good object lesson in this respect. The way. that they backed up and handled the ball was excellent. When to Kick, and How.

When in your own twenty-five it should be a golden rule to kick for the line. This is the surest way of gaining ground. It may sometimes be varied by a kick downfleld to a gap, but not straight towards the opposing full back. Never kick across in front of your own goal, but find the nearest line. Avoid • kicking in your opponents’ twenty-five, unless in a dribbling rush. In such a case and when on the goal line, kick just hard enough for the ball to go. over in 'front of you ready to touch down. If your backs arc good, a much better plan is to heel the ball out, and give them a chance. All backs should learn to kick with either foot. It only requires a little practice and a left foot punt is invaluable when pressed. To sum up, kick for the lino in your own twentyfive, kick for a gap in midfield, avoid kicking too hard when near your opponents’ line. • How to Tackle. There are two correct ways to tackle, oho round the arms and waist so that your opponent cannot pass the ball, the other by going low. To go low wait till your man is almost alongside, then dive at him grasping him round the knees firmly with both hands. A clean tackle like this hurts neither boy and only requires practice aud confidence. Don’t go for the neck, a wriggle or a duck by an opponent will only land you on the ground with a thud.
