PRINCE ARTHUR’S WELCOME
AFRICAN CHIEFS SPEECH Prince Arthur of Connaught told a good story at a banquet held in London to celebrate the 21st birthday of the Secretaries’ Association. Describing a visit he paid as Gover-nor-General of South Africa to a native tribe on the Zambesi, he said: — “It was an extremely hot day, and four thousand perspiring natives grouped themselves in a circle while I sat on a wooden stool in the middle. “The chief spoke at great length. I did not understand a syllable he said, but he spoke for four and a-half minutes under the hour. “Eventually he stopped, and a native interpreted the speech for me, say* ing:— “‘Chief him say now him bally pleased to see you.’ “That is the only translation of thfii speech I got.”
