LEAGUE wrests with PROBLEM IN VAIN
Aust. Press Assn.—United Service. Eeceived Thursday, 8 p.m. GENEVA, June 6. The, League Council for many hours wrestled with the dispute between Lithuania and Poland, Lithuania. stubbornly resisting a unanimous desire for settlement. M. Blokland (Holland) reports that no progress has been made as a result of negotiations owing to the Lithuanian attitude. Prof. Valdemaras (Lithuania) defending the Lithuanian attitude, alleged that armed bands were still threatening Lithuania from Poland, also that Poland had refused the League’s assistance to arrive at a settlement. M., ZalesM (Poland) denied both charges. Sir Austen Chamberlain, intervening, expressed disappointment at the failure of negotiations. Ho declared that Lithuania’s recent claim to Vilna as its capital was contrary to the Council’s desire,, and ho urged Prof. Valdemaras to accept a peaceful settlement, other ■wise ho would lose the Council’s sympathy. ■ Other members joined in the appeal to Prof. Valdemaras, who is the solitary opponent of the resolution in favour of a settlement by September. The Council thereupon ad]ourned to enable private negotiations to proceed.
