April figures show that the Palmerston North municipal buses returned £lO/5/- in revenue more than they did in April, 1927. There was a decrease of 42 passengers. The Palmerston North Borough Council last evening decided to proceed against a number of ratepayers who have failed to pay tho half cost of construction of footways fronting their respective properties.

A motion by Councillor A. E. Hansford that tho Palmerston North Borough Council place £3OO on tho estimates for putting down artesian wells in the Square lapsed for want of a seconder at last night’s meeting of the Council.

Tho sum of £22 4/-, tho amount charged for spoil supplied to the West End School is to be remitted by tho Palmerston North Borough Council, and spoil when available, is to be supplied to the local schools free of charge.

The unemployment figures again show a slight decrease in Palmerston North. For the W'oek ending May 12, the number registered were 30 married men with 93 dependants, and 16 single, a total of 46,. On May 19 the figures were 27 married with 7S dependants, and 17 single men, a total of 44.

It was reported to the Palmerston North Borough Council last night that £9OOO of tho £16,000 sewerage loan authorised by the ratepayers in February last, had been raised at 5J per cent, with a sinking fund of 1 per cent, the term being 20 years. This was considered very satisfactory and the Town Clerk (Mr J. R. Hardie) was authorised to raise the balance of the loan at a' rate not exceeding 53 per cent.

Excellent entries are promised for the Manawatu Rugby Union’s seven-a-side tournament on June 4th. Already 61 teams have entered as follows: 11 senior, 19 junior, 15 third class and Iff school. Eight entries have been received from Wellington, two from Wanganui, five from Horowhenua and three from To Kawau. As some of tho local clubs have still to entei”, it is anticipated that at least 70 teams will bo competing,, as against 64 the previous record.

As a matter of policy tho Palmerston North Borough Council last evening refused an application by a resident of Tiritea that ho bo connected with the town water supply. The Council considered that tho time had arrived when requests from people living outside the town should not be granted and in this connection tho engineer was asked to go into the question of whether the price per 1000 gallons charged those already connected outside the borough should not bo raised.

The following resolution, carried at a recent meeting of the Pahiatua Borough Council, was supported by the Palmerston North Borough Council last evening and Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P., is to be asked to support the same: “That the niombcr for the district, Mr. A. E. Ransom, be asked to assist in getting the Manawatu Gorge Road Control Board disbanded by the Government and for the Main Highways Board to assume control of the Manawatu Gorge road and bridges, and also to take over the existing liabilities of loans and maintenance.”

The Huia Quintette, which is wellknown to the- public of Palmerston North and comprises Messrs B. Pizzoy, A. R. McKcgg, R. J. Robertson, T. Simpson and J W. Huggins, appeared at the Hawcra Male Choir’s concert last week In commenting on their performance, the “Hawcra Star’’ says:— “The work of the assisting artists, Hie Huia QuiiVottc of Palmerston North, proved most popular, and secured a most enthusiastic reception. They combined in several bright, catchy concerted numbers, showing amongst other things harmonised jazz music and otl.lr modern effects. They were very popular with the audience as well as the songs by the members and the novelty item by Mr Will Robertson. They were recalled again and again and cordially responded.” After the concert thoyo were entertained at supper, and Mr Hunter, the patron, referred in eulogistic terms to their most interesting performance.
