BORIC ACID IN BACON

CONVICTION WITHOUT PENALTY. A. conviction without penalty was asked for by prosecuting counsel (Air. F. 11. Cooke) in tho Magistrate's Court yesterday when tho Kiwi Bacon Co. was charged with using boric acid iu bacon contrary lo the Pure Foods and Drugs Act.

It was explained by defendant’s counsel, Mr. L, Lnurrnson, that the boric- acid had been used simply For dusting the bacon to keep i(, clean. Apparently some had got into the bacon.

Mr. Cooke slated that the Health Department was considering the question of suspending the regulation. An endeavour was being made to discover a preservative that would be uuharmfiii to health.

The Magistrate (Mr. J. L. Stout) adopted the suggestion and entered a conviction only. Defendant was ordered to pay costs £1 0s 6d.
