CHESS

By "A.W.” The Palmerston North Chess' Club opened its season on Monday evening. The event took the form of a match between North and South residents, the railway being the dividing line. There was a gratifying response to the invitation extended by the club, several visitors taking part in the contest. The president (Mr A. G. Richards) welcomed the guests, pointing out that though special invitations had been sent out on this occasion, players are always welcome at all club meetings, and that a programme of "consultation,” "caterpillar,” matches, etc., had been arranged with a view to assisting beginners. Several letters of apology for absence were read, including one from the Mayor (Mr A. J. Graham), who it was hoped would open the proceedings, but who unfortunately was unable to bo present. Very complete arrangements had been made by Messrs Stewart and Messenger, and thirteen games were in progress shortly after eight o'clock. At the supper adjournment it was evident that Northern would have to work hard; if they were to avoid defeat, but their efforts wore unavailing and at 10.30 when only one game was unfinished, the Goutliern team, which included a lady (Mrs R. Homan) were declared victors by 9! to 2J. The following amusing brevity was played in a recent match in Palmerston North. White. Black. 1. P—K4 S—KBS 3. S —QB3 P—Q4 3. P —K5 P—Q5 4. S— Qf?s S—Q2 5.
