GOOD HORSES PAY BIG DIVIDENDS AT WANGANUI

Brigadier Bill Stamps Himself ’Chaser oi Ou

Horomea and Silvermine Catch Punters Napping

The Winter Meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club opened yesterday on the Club’s course in tine but doubtful weather after a night’s heavy rain. The course was spongy to start with and grew sticky as the day progressed, making for slow times in the final flat events. There was a large attendance comprising visitors'from many parts. Good fields were the rule throughout, and racing was for the most part interesting. Some excellent dividends were returned during the day, and not a favourite claimed a salute, Ladies’ Boy being the only first favourite to return a dividend. Speculation however was brisk, the totalisator handling £22,302 for the day as against £23,325/10/- for the corresponding day last year, representing a decrease of £1023/10/-. This must be considered satisfactory for a day on which favourites had such a poor run.

There was nothing to mar the sport in the running of the races, and those horses that'had falls did not suffer therefrom, nor did their riders. It was pleasing to see a gentleman rider, Mr. Russell, force Comical to complete the three-mile Steeples course. This is the first time in his two seasons at the game that the Merry Moment gelding has been got round safely, and Mr. Russell deseiwes the plaudits he received.

The duel on the tolalisator in the opening event of the programme, the Purua Handicap, practically resolved itself itself into a struggle between Ladies’ Boy (£1185) and Callanmorc (£1006). Substantial drops w-cro recorded to Pec Simple (£597), Desert Lad (£405), and Chelone (£358).

There was little delay at the tapes Eka from No. 2 position moving out very smartly and soon having a length lead on Ladies’ Boy, Argue, Callaumore, Chelone, Desert Lad, Gasnapper ami King Mart, the rest closing in behind. Ladies’ Boy however, quickly Look up the running from Elea and led across the top, followed by Eka, Desert Lad, Calls nmorc and King Mart with Fee Simple noticeably threading his way through. Pee Simple improved at, the way on the bend and was next behind Ladies’ Boy and Eka as thev turned for home, with Desert La«, Callaumore, King Mart and Clielone following. Reed made a mistake at a critical juncture trying to get up on the rails past Ladies’ Boy and being abruptly checked. The misjudgment probably cost him the rare. Lira ran wide and was soon disposed of. Desert Lad came at the leader on (bo outer from inside the distance and soon had the measure of the Some Boy If gelding. Desert Lad continued on in line stylo to win comfortably by a good neck from Ladies’ Boy, with Pec simple another length and a half back. Close following was Cullarimore. Then came King Mart. Avro, Cold Air, Eka, Bright Comet and Royal Elm. Desert Lad has improved at every race in his

last three starts, and came away very pleasingly when called on for his effort. Foe Simple was unlucky and may have won if Feed bad got his mount through the opening on the rails at the distance which closed on him too soon. Callanmore also finished strongly and should soon be heard of further. Outsider Tripped by Hencoop. On the strength of his two fine efforts at Hawera the public went for San Fera (£1435) strongly in the Hack Steeples. But there was also solid support. for Mixed Heather (£SGS) and Ruby Ring (£8G1). An outsider in Radiate was the unlucky horse of the race having a substantial lead on the field at the last obstacle but crashing in his hurry to be over it. With the exception that Vaninnia was slow to move, the field was despat died evenly, and the line had not broken as they approached the first brush. Risk almost came to grief here, Linton crawling back on to his mount when all but off. Thereafter Radiate took up the role of pacemaker from Mixed Heather, Royal Heather, Risk, Ruby Ring, San Fera, Son o’ Mine and Vaninnia. Risk came to grief at the brush half way along the back stretch .and Vaninnia baulked at the next obstacle. Mixed Heather went to the front in the straight the first time and led Radiate, Ruby Ring, Son o' Mine and San Fera past the stands,- with Royal Heather dropping out of it. Along the back Radiate went, to the fore again. Radiate was leaving his field as they approached the straight I with Mixed Heather and Ruby Ring his nearest attendants. Ho straightened up for the hencoop but failed to negotiate the one obstacle left. Mixed Heather came over safely and continued on to win comfortably by ten lengths from Ruby Ring who w r as three lengths ahead of the unlucky Son o’ Mine. Then came San Fera and Royal Heather.. Twice in Two Essays. The whole field of acceptors went to the post In the Wanganui Steeples, ■which was marked by two incidents of note—the completion of the course by Comical, although ho had to bo driven to his task, and the failure of Frisco Jack in -first-class company. Last year’s winner, Maunga, was first- fancy of the public with £l-32 oualiis chances. Next to claim support was Brigadier Bill (XIOG4), with only a small drop to Frisco Jack. The winner, Brigadier Bill, was accorded an acclamation on returning to the bird cage after his convincing effort, and incidentally his second win in two essays at the big fences.

Peter Maxwell led to the first stand from Comical, Frisco Jack, Brigadier Bill, Tuki. Passin' Through and Maunga, but Comical soon ■?. as in the van and Jed round the first time. Comical almost came to grief at the first brush of the double in front of the stands, but Russell literally pulled him over and pushed him at (he second brush which lie Jav.iiy leaped. Comical still continued in front with. Frisco Jack and Brigadier Bill nearest, and the others all closing the gaps. Maunga was pulled up after a mile and a half was eonrpussed. Coming into the straight after the second circuit Brigadier BITi was taken to the front and led past the stands from Comical, Passin’ Through, Fetor. Maxwell, Tuki and Frisco Jack. The latter was failing badly. Brigadier Bill increased his advantage and jumping splendidly looked a certain winner half a mile from home, mishaps excepted. Ho never gave backers any worry, however, coming over the hencoop without a falter and continuing on to win by ten lengths from Tuki. who had improved from fourth berth at the entrance to the straight. Passin’ Through was another tw'o lengths away, and Comical fourth, close up. Peter Maxwell was

some distance further back, and Frisco Jack was over a furlong away. It was apparent all was not as it should be with him, thought ho did not seem to bo limping as he returned to the birdcage. However it is stated that a leg proved troublesome, and ho may have to bo spelled awhile. Hot Favourite Comes to Grief.

The Kaitokc Hurdles appeared to be the best of good things for Mister Gump for with £IBBO invested on his chances he carried more than twice as much as the next horse supported, Monday (£939). Polyphemus (£G33) and Peshwa (£184) were also in lesser degrees fancied. Mister Gamp’s chances proved frail ones for he was brought over at the third hurdle through uo fault of his own, but as a result of the erratic screw jumping of Stringing Armour who dragged a hurdle over and abruptly chocked the whole field, only one of which was ahead of him. In the melee -Mister Gamp crashed into the fallen obstacle and dislodged his rider. At the rise of the tapes Slanging Armour got out quickly and soon was showing the way to Modern, Our Jack, Glengarili, Wen-day, Polyphemus and Peshwa, with the favourite last. Out Jack went to the front on the bend and led into the straight just clear of the others who were all bunched together. Shining Armour hit the hurdle at the top of the straight hard, bringing it over, and in the congestion Mis tor Gamp missed his step and crashed into the fallen obstacle. Our Jack led out of the straight and into the back, but Peshwa was moving very fast and caught the Benzoman novice half a mile from homo. Their nearest attendants were Wen dhy, Polyphemus, Modern, and GlcugaritT. Shining Armour came to grief at the five furlong post hurdle. Peshwa took command three furlongs from home, and leading Our Jack, Polyphemus, Monday and Modern into the straight and over the last obstacle, went on t/> win easily by one and a half length from Polyphemus who, full of running at the finish, beat Monday by half a length for second stake. Modern was fourth and Our Jack fifth, the latter just failing over the distance. A considerable way back were Blazo, Glengariff and Lady Passenger. The latter tailed the field the whole way after Mister Gamp had fallen and did not appear to bo made show her most forward foot. The fallen horses and riders were unhurt.

Finds Backers Astray. The Open Hurdle event found backers all astray, for the placed horses wore all among the middle or little fancied division. Poneus (£1445) instilled warmest faith, but a tot was pinned -as w-cli on Pour! (£.1143). Then there came a drop to Vexatious (£(152). The winner was entrusted with £GUU and the second horse with £4BB.

Ned Kelly early displayed the pace he has learnt on the flat and when the field had settled clown, led Pencils, Pouri, Main, Mount Marta, Troilus, Vexatious, I’erlc do Leon, Braoninn and Euchre. Pouri dropped back a few places on the bend. Past the stands Poneus was close on the heels of Ned Kelly with Matu and Pouri next, followed by Troilus, Mount Marta and Perle do Leon. Vexatious was in an aggravating mood and would not move up. Troilus ran round the leaders going into the back and soon had a fourlength break on Poneus, Matu and Ned Kelly, with Mount Marta reducing (lie gap between himself and the four ahead of him. Troilus had further bettered his position at the bend, but Mount Marta had caught the others and was going best of the field. Troilus led Mount. Maria, Matu, Feucus, and Perle do Leon to the last obstacle, but the journey had (old its talc ami Mount Marta rattled on the pace over

the last bit to cut him down and wm by two x lengths, with Matu another 12 lengths behind Troilus. Pouri was well back fourth, then followed Pcrlc do Leon, Pencils, Bracman, Vexatious, Euchre and Ned Kelly Horomea Never Headed.

'Apparently it was not a day for favourites, for an outsider in Horomea (£389) went to the front early in the Connolly Handicap, made all the running and had enough in reserve to stave oil a rather belated challenge by tho well-fancied Blimp (£SS2;. Vcsperus £1889) carried well over twice as much as anything else in the race. There was only a matter of a few pounds between Blimp, Royal Damon and Ring Boy. Tho field was squeezing as the tapes rose and Vosperus was shut right out. Royal Damon had a temporary advantage, but as they approached the stands Horomea had gone to tho rails a length clear of Blimp, Black Mint, R I Damon. Beaumont, Glonross, Vosperus, Kawhakina, Ring Boy, Nukuraai and Royal Mint, Tho order was much the same as they went into the back, but Vosperus had moved up a couple of places,’ and Glenross was running in third berth. Across tho top Horomea was going strongly ahead of Blir|p, Glonross, Royal Damon and Kawhakina. Horomea still held the lead as they turned for home, being a couple of lengths ahead of Blimp, with Glenross, Royal Damon, Kawhakina, Vosperns and Beaumont following. Blimp valiantly challenged inside tho distance but there was too much leeway to bo made up and the outsider stuck to it over tho last hundred yards to win by half a nock from Blimp with Royal Damon two lengths further back. Beaumont finished strongly into fourth berth, and then came Glenross, Vcspenw, Black Mint, Kawhakina, Ring Boy, Royal Mint, and Nukumai last. Silvermine Last Out.

A big field of fourteen polished sprinters paraded for the Borough Handicap, the final “recovery chance’’ of the day. Arrow Lad, Scastar, Ladies’ Boy and Mcllisa were the dejections. A spirited duel for the position of favourite was waged between Covert Garden (£IOG9), Limited (£1055) and Tea Time £970), but the former had the ascendency most of the time. Silvcriuinc could muster only 589 tickets on his chances, although of late ho has usually been very much sought after. Once the field settled down there was no changing of positions at any stage of the journey, Benzura alone being the exception that proves the rule, putting in an exceptionally fast bit of work over the final half furlong.

There was a lot of fiddling at the tapes, particularly noticeable disturbers being Moa Bird, Whenuanui and Benzora. Moa Bird was left at the rise of the barrier but was soon up with the field. Silverminc was first to break the line, being closely attended by Tea Time, Limited, Partaga, Covert Garden, Dayguard and Miss Pat. S'lvcrminc continued out in front across the top, and on the bend was followed by Tea Time, Covert. Garden, Limited, Partaga, Miss Pat, Dayguard, Whenuanui, Broad Acre, Bonogne, Moa Bird and First Aero. Silvermino led into tho straight while the rest wore all together but with their relative positions unvaried. Benzora, who was well back as they turned for home, could bo noticed threading his w r ay through, but none of them could get to Hie pacemaker who won comfortably by a length and a half from Tea Time, with Benzora another lengtli away third. Limited was close np fourtn, then came Bonogne, Partaga, Miss Pat, Moa Bird, First Acre, and Broad Acre. WANGANUI WEIGHTS FOR TO MORROW. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, Last Night.
