GHOSTLY KNOCKING

A FARMHOUSE MYSTERY. Occupants,of an ancient farmhouse, near Bolton, Lancashire, reported lately that, following tho disturbance of one or two skulls that wore originally kept at the farm, they had been alafmed by loud knocks and footsteps on the stairs at night. One of the skulls was recently taken to Manchester to have a silver rim put round it, and the same day, they aver, the disturbances began. "The most terrifying experiences come when we are in bed,” said one of the residents. "The knocks come over our heads or at tho door, and then wo hear footsteps on the stairs. I am convinced that the knocks are not caused by loose boards, creaking furniture, rats, wind, or banging doors.” The theory of a resident in the neighbourhood is that during tho Cromwellian period a murder was committed at the farm and the knockings arc those of the constable come to arrest his man.
