MAN SUCCUMBS TO INJURIES RECEIVED IN MOTOR SMASH

lorry Struck Taking Waingawa Men to Work SEVERAL OTHERS BADLY HURT (Per Press Association.) MASTERTON, last Night. A serious motor accident happened in’ 'Queen Street, Masterton, shortly after seven o'clock on Saturday morning, when a delivery van from Wellington collided with Kenneth Alpin s motor lorry, which was conveying freezing works employees to Waingawa. Alpin’s lorry had proceeded as far as the convent when the van, approached from the south. There was no obstruction upon the road other than a milk cart, which was standing in close to the kerb. The right hub cap of the van struck the lorry on the stop, the former turning over. Tho hood portion of the lorry was badly smashed and many of tho occupants injured. Frank Shackleton’s skull was fractured, and the unfortunate man died as the result of his Injuries at 8.45 In the evening. Frank Marsh received injuries to a shoulder. William Hugh Long received injuries to his spine. Hugh Carswell, sustained outs and bruises. ' Marsh, Long and Carswell arc progressing and are reported out Of danger. Charles McAlister and Harry Simpson received minor injuries. Louis Framavne, tho driver of'the Wellington van. received slight injuries to his ribs, but ho was all right after being bandaged. Mrs M. Y. Bates, of Upper Hutt, who was travelling In tho van to Masterton, received minor cuts on the head and log from tho flying glass of the windscreen. Work was suspended for the day at Waingawa, tho butchers remaining in town making anxious inquiries about their comrades lu hospital. An inquest will be held to-morrow. ■ ( SECOND VICTIM IN LEVIN LEVEL CROSSING SMASH. . LEVIN, Last Night Herbert Wilmor Eyes, the second victim Of Friday’s level-crossing accident died in hospital on Satui day morning. Mrs Eyes was filled instantaneously. I Tho crossing where tho tragedy occurred is a particularly dangerous one, the road aproaching tho lino from the east, turning to the right and running parallel with tho line for eight chains, then turning sharply across it. Mr and Mrs Eyes were engaged in delivering bread. The train struck the yan 'fairly in the middle completely wrecking it, scattering the fragments, and carrying the engine a distance of four chains past tho crossing. Eyes was until recently farming near Levin. They leave a family of three young children.

Wlxllo fifty children were crowded on. a landing stage at Kaiapoi to-day watching a regatta the staging collapsed and slowly sank, the children had to hurry ashore through two feet of water. If the collapse of tho staging had been more complete the children would havo been thrown into six feet of water and a position of grave danger would have arisen. One boy swam ashore. Tho others were able to regain tho bank or wore taken off tho sinking stage by motor boats. DROWNED LAD OAVN SON, FATHER’S SAD DISCOVERY. NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Night. Sometime on Friday evening Frederick William Harrison ,aged,l9, fell off the wharf into tho harbour. Evidently he struck his head on something and wins drowned. The family are living in two different houses and each thought tho boy waa with the other. Yesterday afternoon a boy fishing on tho wharf saw the body. He notified a police constable, who sought assistance of a man working with a boat on tho beach. The man rowed out to tho body, turned it over and discovered it was his own son. There was an extensive bruise on tho forehead. It. was disclosed the boy had intended to board a launch lying beside the wharf and in going down tho ladder probably fell. Ho could not swim but may havo been rendered unconscious by the fall.

Shortly after midnight a man named William Gay, single, a labourer, aged lifty-flvo, was killed on the Picton road near Spring Creole being run over by a motor, bus driven by John Edward Hurdlcy, taxi driver of Picton. Deceased crossed the road in front of the bus which swerved to avoid him. The man staggered back and was hit by tho radiator. The wheel also passed over him and death was instantaneous.
