NEGLECTED ALASKA

PROPOSED SALE OP PART. REFUSAL BY AMERICA. TORONTO, February 6. A despatch from Washington says that the United States will not consider favourably any proposal on the part of Canada to purchase the “Alaskan pan-handle. ’ ’ Mr. Dan Sutherland, the Alaska ' delegate to Congress, said that the United States should buy British Columbia, rather than sell any part of Alaska. The Alaskan pun-handle is the narrow strip of Alaskan territory taken out of the coast of British Columbia. Its chief port, Skagway, whieft is vital to the development of Northern BntColumbia, has been so neglected by the United States Administration that the matter has become an international scandal. Sir Hugh Denison, the retiring Australian Commissioner to the United States, addressing the Vancouver Canadaian Club last summer, suggested that Skagway should either be sold to Canada, or internationalised, as had been done in the ease of the Adriatic port of Finnic. The fcuggos lion evoked considerable discussion, which apparently lias led to the above announcement.
