CONDITION OF WATER AT MUNICIPAL BATHS

Mr. W. C. Collier made the following statement to a special meeting of th« College Street School Committee last evening;— Regarding my remarks at the last meeting of this School Committee, I wish to make the following statement regarding the filling of the baths, in order to correct any misconception that may have arisen. Up to and including the week ending Monday, 6th February,, the baths had been regularly emptied and refilled three times per fortnight.. During the week ending 13 th February on account of the extreme shortage the water had been retained all the week, only sufficient having been run in to make up foi what hod spilled into the splash troughs. On Sunday night, the 12th February, the ' baths were completely emftied and refilled, and no furthci wat,er- except sufficient to keep th? bath at tho proper level had been run in. So that up to the present time the water in the baths has been maintained in. a thoroughly fresh state and has not boon at any time a menace to health. On tho other hand I am, authorised by His Worship tho Mayor to state that unless ample rain falls and thi water supply very much improves ovei this coming woek-end, the Municipal Baths will have to bo closed down in the interests of public health, as there will be no possibility of refilling them for next week.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—Re water in Municipal Baths. Mr. McLeod has assured the writer that the water had been changed three times during the two weeks during which I had suggested the water had not been changed. My misstatement was made from a general impression that the discolouration of the water had given. I regret if it has scared some people from partaking of theii usual morning dip, as I have been given to understand has been the case. —I am, etc., P J. STUBBS.
