The Sheffield Shield match, Nei* South Wales v. South Australia, has commenced (Phillips 112, Andrews 58 Kippax temporarily retired, 81, Scancs 44, Bradman not, out 65). The weather was fine and the wicket fast and good. Phillips and Andrews played sparkling innings, the latter’s footwork being magnificent, while Phillip’s made many fine shots. Phillips, however facing Grimmett, ■ whose bowling was a model of consistency and accuracy, showed indecision, but later played with more confidence and played a splendid fighting innings. The fielding throughout was very keen but the bowling left much to be desired. Klppax gave glimpses of perfect timing and artistic batting, but affected by the sun he hadto retire for treatment. Scanes and Bradman both played soundly and confidently.
