THE LYCEUM

DOUBLE STAR BILL—LAURA LA PLANTE AND BUSTER KEATON.

11 Beware of Widows, ;: tiro feature starring Laura La Plante wliicli is at the Lyceum Theatre to-night, is one of (ho fast-moving rollicking far.ee comedies that defies analysis. It is an exceedingly funny production jammed with good old-fashioned laughs brought on by the latest developments in motion picture acting and production methods. Laura La' Plante, is bewitching as the girl without a husband. There are two other couples in the picture seeking marriage and innumerable original mix-ups occur. Happily, there is not even a suggestion of the bedroom farce which has been produced with alarming frequency of late. “ Beware of 'Widows ” proves that suggestivcncss is not necessary to make a highly successful comedy. The story is well-constructed and each incident has its purpose—which is the giving of or the building to a very hearty laugh. The coherence of the play should bo attributed jointly to Owen Davis, whf wrote the stage play from which the motion picture was adapted, Beatrice Van, who wr.otc the script, and Wesley Buggies, the noted director who, as it were, wielded the megaphone. A supporting cast of good troupers appear in this picture headed by Bryant Washburn. Walter Hiers, of course, is good for many hiughs. Heinio Conklin makes an exceptionally “ goofy ” captain of the houseboat on which most of the action takes place. Tally Marshall, Paulette Duval, Catherine Carver and Otto Hoffman do excellent work. The second star, on the programme to-night is the laughable film, “ Go West,” starring tbo - great comedian Buster Keaton, a popular favourite with theatre patrons.
