BRITAIN'S EFFORTS TO PREVENT WAR
German Ambassador Frankly Acknowledges “ALLIANCE WITH AUSTRIA LED TO RUIN” [By Electric Cable-Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] LONDON, Nov. 10. Tiic “Daily Chronicle's” Berlin correspondent, says that Prince Liclmowsky, who was German Ambassador in London bcfor e the War, in his memoirs extending over two volumes acknowledges frankly Britain’s ellorts to prevent the World War. He admits that he himself repeatedly informed Berlin that in the event of an attack against France, Germany must reckon on Britain’s enmity. “Sir Edward Grey repeatedly said to me: “If war breaks out it will be the greatest catastrophe the world has even seen.” “Ho was right. No statesman who wants war talks like that. It was the foolish alliance with Austria that led to Germany’s ruin, coupled with the blindness and intractability of the German statesmen. ! “Sir Edward Grey was ready to meet us on every question. There was only on 0 thing I could nevei nave achieved, namely, to hold Sir Edward Grey back from participating, in the World War the moment when we declared war against Franco and on top of that had violated Belgium neutrality.” f'; The memoirs are interesting, showing that while officially Germany is denying her war guilt, Lichnowsky at any rate is under no illusion as to who caused the war.
