THE BIBLE IN SCHOOLS

ATTITUDE OF LEAGUE. (To Tho Editor.) Sir, —Tho Bible in Schools League of New Zealand and the People's Organisation have been battling for a principle as well as an objective. Every member of the organisation desires as an objective the "rctoration j of tho Bible to the schools of this j land/’ and'as a principle “the recog-j nition of God in the education of our children.” | Tho people's elected representatives' in Parliament on Wednesday last j unanimously supported the principle we have at heart. A large minority voted for the Bill known as “Tire Isitt Bill” for Bible reading in schools — most decidedly all these votes were for “the recognition of God in tho education of our children.” A majority (the remainder present) voted for strengthening what is known as “The | Nelson System,” also devised for “the | recognition of God in the education of | our children.” It is self-evident therefore, that tho , people’s elected representatives in Parliament as a whole unanimously recognised the necessity for, and absence of, such recognition of God in our system of State Education. To suggest for a moment that any member of Parliament who joined in this unanimous support of a principle was insincere would be to impugn the spotless honour always associated with those tire nation elects to its, halls of wisdom and offices of Government. Therefore, to-day we! can, one and all, congratulate members of all parties in Parliament torso worthily supporting and affirming the principle We have been fighting for so long. It is now up to vrvery member of Parliament to grapple immediately with' the problem so that the children of this land will no long- 1 er suffer tho disabilities of a Godless system of education. Perhaps Archbishop Cleary and the great church militant ho represents will also come eagerly forward and assist with genuine and sensible suggestions to solve the admitted problems and give our children the improved education they now lack in our State schools. —I am. etc., E. PHILPOT CROWTHER.
