FLETCHER BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD.

The annual road race at ,tho Boys’ High School ranks .high on the list, of athletic events conducted by the school. The race in itself is a spectacular event, all the hoys of the school competing and when some ,250 , while-shlrted . figures break into a stream along Featherston Street, the race has many interested spectators. The race calls for determination and stamina and requires hard physical training,- being a severe strain on the runners.

* The course is approximately two miles, starting from the school gates up Featherston Street to', Heretaunga Street and thence to. Boundary Road and back down North Street to College House. The runners were well strung out coming down Boundary Road. R. Orgias ana B. Fletcher running together some fifty yards ahead of L. Seymour, who was leading the ’ next b until by fifty yards. Fletcher and Orgias ran together until some 500 yards from home, Fletcher then drawing ahead to win with a fine spurt and break the school record by a good margin. Orgias ran a good race, but lacked the final dash that won the race for Fletcher by about 75 yards. The following was the order of the first ten runners’ home, close finishes being witnessed all v the way through : E. ■ Fletcher, E. Orgias, L. Seymour, 0. Espiner, W. Cowley, D. Spring, A. Miidon, D Woodley, D. Smart, W. Brydeh. The winner’s time for the course was 12mins. 55 3-ssecs, The former. record was ISmins. Through his meritorious win Fletcher takes the Whalley Cup, which was presented some years ago for tin event. The race also counts for the club championship, at the school, points being allocated to the first fifty home, the first man in gaining fifty points for: ; his club and so on down tho list. Albion Club, which also won the race last year, was first with a total of 432 points, Gordon Club second, with 358, Phoenix third; with 265 and Kia Ora 225, fourth.
