BUSES OF THE BARN

THE NEW BUS ACCOMMODATION The municipal buses moved from their old quarters into much more commodious and up-to-date ones In Albert Street during Wednesday afternoon. The homing place of these lords oi the road remains a mystery to many people, but the ratepayers of Palmerston North can rest assured that their fleet of municipal buses is well looked after, especially in its new quarters. The new shed is built to accommodate nine buses while provision has also been made for ample extension in the future. There is still quite a lot of work to be done in the direction of plant installation, etc., but the big commodious building itself is now finished. One very noticeable improvement is th e substitution of sliding entrance doors for the ones on hinges which, during the days of winter winds, used to give the drivers at the old barn a lot of strenuous exercise. A large and well equipped workshop—4o feet by 48 —is in course of being fitted up. the plant from the old barn having already been installed Incorporated in the workshop scheme is a battery room with a distiller, an electric vulcaniser, and a very large and up-to-date lathe. Around the main body of the building are situated a large storeroom, a dark tyre-room and an oil store. The men, who have to spend a fair amount of time in the barn between 7 p.m. and 9 p-m. arc well catered for with a rest room which is considerably larger than the one at the old barn. ■ The petrol supply is a feature of importance .there being one bowser installed and another n course of erection. Electric light, etc., has alreauy uebn put ,u and the mechanics are at present engaged in fitting up the repairing plant. The buses already look quite at home in their new quarters and up-to-date cleaning apparatus bears witness that their outside appearance will be well looked after. j
