DANNEVIRKE HUNT CUP WON BY FRISCO JACK

Royal Damon Wins the Flat Mile

Nasty Accident in the Hurdles

The Dannevirke Hunt Club’s annual meeting was held yesterday in fine weather before a good attendance. The “ tote ” put through £8,657 for the day, which was £326 more than for the meeting last year, when £8331 was registered. Punters generally had a good day, four favourites out of the eight races getting home first. Mishap attended the running of the Oringi Hack .Hurdles, Arataura falling-and being killed, his jockey, Hector Gordon, Deceiving severe injuries necessitating his removal to the Dannevirke Hospital. The main flat event was won by Royal Damon, while the Hunt Cup Steeples was won by ’Frisco Jack, who is trained by H. Doyle at Awapuni.

An Eight Lengths Victory.

the field went into the back Llght-

Ballyfarnon. in view of his running on Wednesday was made favourite , for the Hunters’ Hurdles, and he fully justified this support by winning fairly, easily. He carried £7., more that the second favourite, Calluna. Panchito topic up the early running and led Musical, Ballyfarnon, Calluna and Scornful over the first pair of battens. Going into tho back there was no change in the order, but Scornful dropped further back and was out of the race on the turn for home. Ballyfarnon moved up into second place rounding the turn, and ■ led into the straight from Panchito. Musical, Calluna and Scornful, in which order the field finished, Ballyfarnon, winning by eight lengths from Panchito, who was two lengths better than Musical. Calluna came in next pulling up, and Scornful trotted in as the field returned 'to weigh In. A Hot Favourite Scores, Red Fuchsia was backed down to a very short price for tho Oringi Hack Hurdles, carrying £IOO more than the next in demand, Mountain Top. The race proved to be unfortunate, Arataura falling at the second fence and breaking- his neck, the jockey being severely hurt, but not, fortunately, as seriously as it appeared he would be. The horse rolled right over him, and Gordon practically took the weight of the fall. .Parsing the stand, the order of tho field was Mountain Top, (who took, the running from Red Fuchsia over tho second fence), the favourite. Revel. Rakauponga and Braeman. There was no further change in the order until the field rounded the home turn, when the leaders were Red Fuchsia, Mountain Top and Revel, who were about twenty lengths clear of the other pair. Red Fuchsia and Mountain Top battled out. the finish, tho favourite prevailing by threequarters of a .length, Revel being two lengths away third. '■ Twenty lengths away were Kakauponga and Braeman together. Excess the Third Successive Favourite Excess, in spite of his failure on Wednesday, was backed down to a short price for the Novice, and for / the third time in succession, the public picking was justified. The start was rather a ragged one. Degree, Heather Blend and Air Force being left at the barrier. Excess led Hodren, Kindle, Monetize and Fallow when the field settled down but at the turn, Hodren assumed command, but only for a short time however, for soon as < jdie field entered the straight Excess again shot to the front, and led for the remainder of the journey, Hodren, Kindle, More-g-p.3. Fallow and Ring Boy being the order behind him. Kindle nearly got up hi .time to beat the favourite but the latter, however, prevailed by half a length. Kindle being two lengths better than Ring Boy. Borsollno was fourth, closely followed by Hodren. Fallow and Miss Scandal. Frisco Jack Wins the Hunt Cup. Banjuko was sent out favourite for the Hunt Cup Stecpes, four horses failing to fulfil their engagement leaving eleven to face tho barrier. Next in order of public fancy was Birkenose, who carried £172 less than Banjuke. . Panchito who was filling his second engagement for the day; led over the stand double brush, where Handy lost his rider, but when

jmore took up the running from Panchlto, Banjuke, Frisco Jack, Birkenose, P6ep o’ Day while Formh-ead pulled up, apparently through the loss of a stirrup, Iron. Passing the stand the second time, the order was Panchito, Lightmore, Frisco Jack and Banjuke at the head of the next lot. At the far turn Panchito was’ still in charge, the field -which had a long tail being placed, Frisco Jack, Lightmore, Birkenose, Banjuke Peep o’ Day, Risk and Banjuke. Coming Into the straight Frisco Jack went after the' leader and caught him over the last fence, coming on to win by twelve lengths from Panchito, -who must have been tired. Twenty lengths further back came Risk, followed by Banjuke, Peep o’ Day, Lightmore, Birk'enose Buckeye and Tlmipouri In that order. Koyal Damon’s Easy Win. Starboard Light and Royal Damon were best backed for the big mile, carrying between them pne third of the total money Invested. The field were sent away to a fair start. Phantasy and Royal Damon taking up the running until the course proper was reached when Lady Ideal went to the front, showing the way to Royal Damon, Willow Wai, Beaumont, Epistle, Phantasy and Starboard Light. At the five furlong mark, Willow Wai took charge. Lady Ideal, Lipsoi, Royal Damon, Beaumont Starboard Light' and Grand National being the order behind. Willow Wai sighted home first. Lady Ideal, Royal Damon, Starboard Light, Beaumont, Epistle and Lipsoi straightening up for home in that order. In the run to the judge Royal Damon stayed best | and won by two lengths fre Willow Wai who was almost that distance in front of Starboard Light. Next to come home were Lipsoi, Beaumont, Othon and Passionate in that order. • Eleven Scratching.?. The scratching pen wrought havoc with the six furlong Hack, eleven tof the eighteen acceptors failing to face the barrier. Arch Arrow finished up favourite, being £45 better backed than Imitation, who was next in demand. Rosebush took up the early running, leading Imitation, Arch Arrow, Abisognc and Tanagra in that order. When they had covered a furlong, the order was Rosebush, Arch Arrow, Imitation, Abisogne, Tanagra and Chips. When the field turned for homo Rosebush and the favourite were paired in the lead Imitation and Tanagra being in close attendance, with Abisognc at the head of the bunch. Imitation went to the front at the distance and stayed there to win by a head from Abisogne, who was two lengths better than Rosebush. Then came Tanagra, Chips, Arch Arrow, Fee Simple and Lady Cynthia in that order. Lady Faye From End to End, Lady Faye was the fourth favourite of the day. to pass the post first, »be leading from end to end. Behind he r from the barrier the order was Gordon Swift, Tintoretto, Musical and Happy Release, in which order they went past the stand into the back straight. The only change in the order which was affected by the time the home turn was started was that the last named pair changed places. In the run down the straight home, Tintoretto got to within two lengths of the leader, Lady Faye, to

beat Gordon Swift bj two lengths for second place. Musical was fourth and Happy Release fifth.

A Judicial Inquiry.

A'taroria was sorted out for the Kaltoke Hack Handicap by the public and ho was sent out a £124 bettor backed, lioiso than Butterscotch, the next in demand. Watchman was the first out and led on to the course proper from Tanagra, Ataroria Debate and Calithe. The order at the five furlong mark was Watchman, Atareria, Tanagra, Debate, Calithe, Toka and Butterscotch with Volhynla last Watchman was the first to sight home, he being clear of Debate, Tanagra, Calithe and Cerf when the field' straightened up. In the run to the judge, Watchman and Tanagra were locked together, and just before passing the post, Cerf shot across in front of Tanagra, the latter being cut out into third place, the judge awarding Cerf and Watchman a dead heat. Toka was fourth, follows i by Caliche, Atareria, Butterscotch and Debate in that order. The Protest. Following the lodging of a protest for the crossing of Tanagra by Cerf near the winning post the stewards conducted a judicial inquiry. A lengthy hearing produced the verdict that the horse flinched under the punishment of the whip, and no blame was attachable to the Jockey The decision of the judge was not interfered with.
