MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Oroua County Council met at Peilding yesterday. Cr. A. Campbell (chairman) presiding. There were also present Councillors T. Green, W. McLennan, R. MacDonald, W. H. Brewster, W. Gronhow and O. McF.lroy; Correspondence, From the Treasury, forwarding £6Ol 6s 6d being subsidy on rates tollcctcd for the year 1326-37. —Received. From the Kairanga County Council forivarding £337 77s 3d being the Council’s proportion of heavy traffic fees. —Received. From the Public Works Department. forwarding £475 12s lOd being subsdy on payments on account of of highways work.—Received. From Mr. J. Gordon Eilott, M.P., advising that the Minister of Internal Affairs approved, provided there were no objections, to divert certain loan moneys for the purpose of constructing bridges on the Halcombe Hoad. —- Received. From Sir James Wilson, thanking the Council for action taken in connection with the road to his daughter’s property.—Received. Prom Madge ad Co., asking for permission to increase the speed of ’buses while in the Oroua County.—Decided to advise that the Council did not propose to increase the speed provided for under (he heavy traffic regulations. Prom J. Lynch, asking for refund of rates on account of duplication on roll by Valuation Department.— Resolved that the Council had ■no power to grant a refund on account of i-atcs but an adjustment would be considered next year. From C. F. Bailey, asking for repairs to be carried out to Root street. —Referred to the Engineer for action. From E. Davenport, asking for culvert at 'his entrance on Ulysses road to be extended. —Referred to tiro Engineer for action. From Messrs. Haggitt- and Elliott, forwarding a letter from D. C. Cul-

linane on behalf of J. Morris offering part payment of outstanding rates.— Accepted. Rate Roll. The following alterations were made on the County rolls: J. Morris to Charles C- Youlc, J. H. Vincent to Christine Jensen; Catherine ICarstcn to Harry D. Currie; Win, Blaskett to Ivan Hughes: Crown to Charles S. Wycherley: James Bros, to W. H. Humphrey. Treasurer’s Report. Total rates outstanding at March 31, 1327, £1173 10s 4d; arrears collected to date £233 10s; amount outstanding £945 Os 4d. Amount of rates levied April 1, 1327, £14,708 Is 9d: collected, £1415 »2s Id; outstanding, £13,294 19s Sd. Bank balances: County Fund Account (dr.), £5310 17s; Highways Loan Account (cr.), £341 13s.—Received. Engineer’s Report. Western riding.—All main highways have been frequently treated With the grader, but apart from some ‘‘light gravel repairs, little other work has been done on them. A few small slips on Arapata road have been cleared and gravel repairs have been carried out at Onepuhl, principally on Tokorangi hill. A new concrete pipe culvert ha s been put In on Tokorangi road. Dumps of gravel have been carted out at North street and on Kimholton road. Porlong’s road hag been badly cut up during the wet weather and will require further repairs. Eastern riding.—Watcrtablcs on Watershed and Midland roads have been attended to. Some gravel repairs have been carried out on Ulysses and Spur roads. Several slips occurred on Siberia road but have since boon cleared. Work at McCool’s deviation has been .recommenced. Crusher operation has been delayed considerably through wet weather. About 65 chains of Taonui-Bunnythorpo road have been coated with crushed gravel and lire greater part of this rolled and top-dressed with screenings. This end of this week should just about see die first section of this road completed. A number of roads about Colyton have received a dressing of

screened gravel. Reid’s lino, Ktoncy Crock road, Buunythorpe road, and Nannostad’s road have been' ti-immcd with the grader.—Received.
