PIG BREEDERS

MEETING OF NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL.

Mr. N. X’. Ncilsen (Tiakiliyiuna) presided over a meeting of the rig Breeders’ Council in Palmerston North yesterday, when there wore also present Messrs J. F. Shepherd (Levin), W. I’. Bickers, J. McFarland (Fcllding), J. A. Bussell (Palmerston North), F. Discombe (Cambridge), S. Knight (Auckland), F. W. Cornwall (Taranaki).

An apology was received from Mr. G. H. Barnett (Leeston.) Mr Colin W. Anderson (Auckland) wrot c regarding the suggestion that owing to the increasing interest in Largo White pigs, it would bo advisable to organise a separate society for that breed and asking if the Council would favour the suggestion. The general opinion of the Council was that the interests of the breed would not bo best served by Large White breeders forming their own society .and that they would be well advised to continue under the auspices of the Now Zealand Pig Breeders’ Association which catered for all breeds equally. The Council did not give favour to any one breed. The Northern Wairoa A. and P. Asociation wrote asking for donation of a trophy for its forthcoming Show. —To be asked to forward a copy of schedule so that th.e Council could sec if a donation was warranted. The Australian Stud Pig Breeders’ Society notified that the matter of unregistered pigs sold to NCw Zealand would be put before the Federal Council and the result would be advised.

The Whangarei A. and P. Association wrote thanking the Council for awarding ‘ the Perrctt Challenge Shield for competition at their Spring Show., It was trusted the trophy would induce strong competition. The Society also asked to be elected to the membership of the Association. The Prim e Minister advised the Council that he had carefully noted the representations of the Council regarding the export trade of New Zealand pork, and that ho would be glad to confer with the Minister of Agriculture with a view of giving them earnest donsideration.

The Departmental Instructor in Swine Husbandry advised that Otago brooders were desirous of forming a branch of thp 'Asssoeiation and asked that a copy of rules be forwarded. —The Secretary (Mr K. Glendinning) stated that he had replied to the request but so far nothing further had been reported. The Instructor in Pig Raising of the Queensland Department of AgrN culture forwarded a booklet issued by the Queensland branch of thhe Australian Stud Pig Breeders’ Society, and also information regarding the pamphlets on the subject of pig raising that were available. As the Department and the New Zealand Association had much in common, the writer said he would be pleased to correspond and supply information which might be of interest. x In connection with the question of branch boundaries for subsidy purposes, the Council recognised the difficulty of drawing up fixed lines of demarkation at the present time. It was finally decided to accpet the secretary’s suggestion that branch secretaries be asked to forward a list of members and for each one that was financial th c Association would grant a subsidy of 5/-. The Council devoted a considerable amount of time to the question of judging standards with the idea of getting uniformity. It was generally accepted that superiority of carcase should come first and that pigs should only be passed over where colour markings were. seriously at fault. A few white hairs for instance should not disqualify an animal. It was pointed out that very often the slightly broken-coloured pig was a better animal as far. As shape and length was concerned. ) A standard of points will be published in the Herd Book for each brood. Thirteen now members were 'elected.

The following additonal Judges wore elected: —Messrs, E. H. Galpin (Sonthbridge), A. Vickers, (Blenheim), C. 11. Washer, (Havrera), ,T. Sellars (Okaiawa), A. H. Grover, (Bell Block), F.
