LARGE N.Z. BUTTER TRADE WITH CANADA

Possibilities Develop; First Shipment Sent

EXTENDING TO EASTERN SEABOARD

The possibility of developing a large trade in export butte r to Canada has been attracting considerable attention in dairying circles in New Zealand. The first shipment of 5,000 boxes was despatched to Vancouver by the “Aorangi” a fortnight age and the probable magnitude of tho trade may be gauged from the fact that insulated space has already been booked by tiro Vancouver Mail steamers for several months. A possibility of even more importance is the prospect of doing a still larger' trade with the great cities on the eastern seaboard of Canada toward which the first shipment will go by th e "Middlesex” at the present timed to go about the middle of October. 'l'hose vcssles will find a convenient port of discharge at Halifax or St. John, en route to Great Britain as the St. Lawrence is frozen during tho months of the northern winter in which trade will be conducted from either of thes e ports. Butter can be readily railed to Montreal which v/ill probably remain the distributing centre for supplying Quebec as well as Toronto and other largo cities further up the river. , Mr P. H. Leonard, of Leonard and Sons, who recently returned from an extensive tour of Canada and the United States, states that there seems every probability that Eastern Canada alone v could absorb 1590 tons of New eZaland- butter during tho coming Northern winter, and there was also a possible outlet direct to th e United tries. In anticipation of this he had made necessary arrangements with responsible firms in NeW York, Chicago, Montreal, Winnipeg, and Vancouver who will import on a straightout purchasing basis according to the market offering. THE ALLAN WILKIE COY. / DELAYED VISIT TO PALMERSTON NORTH. Owing to an unavoidable alteration in the itinerary of the Allan Wilkie Shakespearean Company, tho company will now not be able to appear at Palmerston North until early in November. The organisation will leave Christchurch next Monday evening to commence the North Island tour, visiting Marton, Wanganui, Now Plymouth and Hawera cn route to Auckland.
