East Coast Superior in First All

Black Trial

(Per Press Association), NAPIER, Last Night.

The first of the All Black Rugby trials was played at McLean Park, Napier, this afternoon when the Combined Wairarapa—Bush team met the East Coast combination (Hawke’s Bay, Poverty Bay and East Coast), the latter winning by 23 points to S. South Canterbury Decisively Beaten SHIELD HOLDERS WIN 47—7. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. Tho South Canterbury Union has been agitating strenuously since Canterbury won the Ranfurly Shield to have the match with Canterbury today declared a Shield match. The Union still pressed tho claim after the New Zealand Union had ruled against it. The match was' played to-day and South Canterbury were completely overwhelmed being beaten by 47 points to 7 by tire Canterbury team. The ground was fast. On the last t\yo occasions the teams have met South Canterbury have been victorious, but to-day after the first quarter of an hour never looked like It. In the forwards the superiority of the Canterbury side was not very marked, but the Canterbury backs buried the opposition .and had Robilliard and Lillburn been on the field the score might have been larger. South Canterbury’s score included an excellent potted goal by Fairbrother kicked from near the side lino. The other score was a penalty goal kicked by Strang, so that Canterbury’s line was not crossed. CANTERBURY COMBINED FOR ALL BLACK TRIAL. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. The following team has been chosen to represent Canterhury-South Can-terbury-Ashburton Combined against Otago-Southland-North Otago Combined in the All Black trial match at Dunedin on September 28. Full back J. Harris (Canterbury). Threequarters A. C. E. Robilliard, S. R. Carleton, and J. Steele (all Canterbury). Five-eighths; H. Lillburn (Canterbury) and Strang (S. Canterbury). Half back: W. C. Dailey (Canterbury). Forwards: G. Scrimshaw (wing), J. T. Burrows, F. Clark, G. T. Alley, H. B. Godfrey, J. B. Jackson (all Canterbury), W. Stewart and M. McKenna (South Canterbury). Reserves; (back) J. R. Robilliard (Ashburton). N. P. McGregor and H. T. Stewart were not available for the first trial match and A. White is not available for the South African tour.
