LANG DEFEATED IN TRIAL OF STRENGTH

The Lang-Willis’ faction were defeated in the first trial of strength at a meeting of tho Parliamentary Labour Caucus on the motion of the Hon. E, A. McTiernan for suspension of standing orders to allow members to discuss tho Goodin-Gillies pact.The Lang-Willis faction strongly opposed tho motion which was carried by 24 vote to 19. Caucus by a similar majority refused to receive a deputation from the Seale Conference. Before Caucus met Mr Lang made an abortive attempt to secure an adjournment of tho meeting. ABSENT MEMBERS’ PROXIES. ONLY GIVEN FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES. (Received 1 Tuesday, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, April 25. Press cables from Australia state that Mr M’Kell’s and Mr Baddeley’s proxies entitle Mr Lang to record their votes in favour of tho Seale Conference in reference to tho expulsion of Messrs Goodin and Gillies. Mr Baddeley denies this. He says the proxies -were only given for specific purposes, excluding the Goodin and Gillies reinstatement, which ho and Mr M’Kell still defend. BELIEVED aiR WILLIS WILL RESIGN. (Received Wednesday, 1.10 a.m.) SYDNEY, April 26. The Pallamentary Labour Caucus passed a resolution repudiating the actions of tho Easter Conference in expelling Messrs Goodin and Gillies from tho party and condemning the actions of Mr Willis at the Conference. It is believed the outcome of the resolution will be the resignation of Mr Willis from the Ministry. j £250,000 IN DERBY SWEEP WINNER TO TAKE £75,000 INTEREST FOR SIX WEEKS PAYS t ALL EXPENSES. Receipts from tho Stock Exchange Mutual Subscription, and otherwise for the Derby S,weep reached the record figure of £250,000. Thousands of applications for tickets were refused. Seventy-five thousand pounds will be allocated to tho winner, £90,000 will be paid in subsidiary prizes, and £60,000 among the drawers of all of the 300 nominated horses. Twenty-five thousand pounds goes to charities. Interest on the fund for six weeks pays all expenses,
