KEROSENE WASHING

It is not generally known that kerosene, remarks’a Scotch p» per, used in conjunction with water, soap, and soda, is extremely useful for washing very greasy clothes, such as kitchen aprons. It is also very efficacious in the. case of infectious clothing, as the germs are killed in the process of washing. Half-fill the copper with water, and in it dissolve a quarter of a pound of soap and a-quarte.r of a pound of soda. When the water is boiling, add two tablespoonfuls of the best kerosene; then put in the dirty clothes. Boil for half-an-hour, adding more soap and soda to the water if the scum rises to the surface, as this shows that the water is too hard. Remove the articles from the copper and rinse them thoroughly, first in hot water to which soda has been added, and then in cold water. If polsible. allow the clothes to dry in the open air, as this helps to remove any slight smell of kerosene. Infectious clothing rmist be boiled in the water as above) for at least one hour. This will kill the germs; but the articles should be boiled twice more, in order to kill the spores which would -otherwise be liable to develop later.. t„
