MACHINERY ON THE FARM
The Government Statistics makes an interesting report based on, the 1920 Census of the use of machinery on the farm in New Zealand. It has not grown very much since 1925, except In the- case of electric motors, which have increased from 3451, with 7285 horse power, in 1925, to 6356, with 13,631 horse-power, in 1926. Tractors, too, have increased from 1026 to 2025 for 1926. Water power is. increased from 3325 h.p. to 3614 h.p. Steam and iternal combustion ongivea show a decline from a combined horse-power of 65,769 in 1925, to 63,927 in 1926. Portable traction engines number 832, or 22 less than 1925. Reapers and.binders, threshing machines, and chaffcutters are slightly less in 1926. Cream separators number 45,765, and milking plants 16,391, both showing substantial increases in number. The total number of Cows machine-milked in 1925 was 705,033: in 1926, 729,772: machine shearing plants show a slight increase.
