TIMBER INDUSTRY MUCH DEPRESSED
DEPUTATION URGES INCREASED DUTIES. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON. Last Night. A deputation representing the timber interests both pro erapolyers and employees ,and local bodies interested in timber royalties, waited on Mr Coates and other ministers to-day. They stressed that there was a great depression in the Industry which was being strangled, . and urged increased duties qn Imported Umber. Mr Coates said the position was very delicate. If New Zealand products could bo used in New Zealand very few would disagree with a duty so long as there was a competitive element in existence. A tariff commission was now inquiring into the timber industry in conjunction with others. The Government would ,glve careful considex*atlon to the representations of the deputation. Mr Coates inferred incidentally to the desirability of rcguTaffonS with a view to the preservation of New Zealand forests.
