NEW CONDUCTOR FOR ORCHESTRA
MR. C. Jj. MOWLEM ACCEPTS OFFICE. practices to be resumed. Tlio widespread and genuine expressions of regret which followed the announcement that the Palmerston North Orchestral Society was going into recess showed how large a place the orchestra occupied in the community. The news that a new conductor has heen appointed and new instrumentalists have offered their services will, therefore, he received with genuine pleasure. ,
Last night the active' members ol the Palmerston North Orchestral Society met at All Saints* Schoolroom at 8 o’clock. The president (Mr. C. L. Mowlem) advised those present of improved conditions brought about by the offers of assistance in the sections of the orchestra which were expected to be weak when it was decided to go into recess.
Mr. P. Larcomb proposed Mr. Mowlem as conductor and assured him of the whole-hearted support of the active members if he would accept the office. Mr. Hood seconded the proposal, and. in doing so, said he felt sure that there was every prospect of the greatest success under Mr. Mowlem’s conductorshiep. ■ ‘ , The proposal was unanimously supported by all present. Mr. Mowlem, in accepting the office, said he felt sure that with the hearty co-operation of the playing members programmes could, be presented acceptably to the honorary members. Young players would bo encouraged as they were, the future backbone of the Society. . . , ,
Dr. G. W. Peach, Messrs. A. Tonkin, C. Greening and others assured the new conductor of their heartiest support. It was decided to resume practices on j Monday night next, in the All Saint"’ Schoolroom, Society will welcome new players and the committee and .conductor, will be pleased to interview them on Monday night at 30.
