STOP LOOK OUT FOR ENGINE
MOTORISTS WHO FAILED TO DO SO. It was most fortunate for Edwin Bartholomew, of Feilding, that when the car he was driving was struck by a train at the Turakina crossing on Feb., 15, a doctor was handy, because he received such serious injuries to his head that ho might other-' wise easily have died. The Magistrate took this into consideration yesterday when mdw was charged with driving over the railway lino when same was not clear. It was stated ’ by Mr. F. H. Cooke, who prosecuted for the Department, that the alarm bells at the crossing were ringing, the engine whistle had been sounded and, what was more, three motor cars were already stationary at the crossing waiting for
the train to pass when defendant drova right on. , A fine of £3 and costa totalling £l/11/- wa 3 imposed. A similar penalty ‘ was inflicted upon Hilda Walton, of Feilding, who, on Feb. 19, drove over the Kimbolton road crossing in front of the Royal train which, at the time, was on its way up to Auckland. Defendant said she had kept a good look out but her view had been obscured by a rake of trucks.. She was not expecting a train at _ that particular time. ■ The Magistrate: You were relying on your knowledge instead of keeping a proper look out, you must bo treated the same as the others. '
