CANTERBURY MARKETS

- THE WHEAT POSITION CHRISTCHURCH, . Saturday. Some diversity of opinion exists as to current prices of wheat. Fowlwheat has been bought at from 55., 45 to 5s 6d on trucks,. but merchants who are offering 5s 4d to 5s sd' bn trucks for milling are not making much headway. Another penny to twopence would probably see a good deal of wheat change hands* but in the meantime there is a condition to some extent of marking time. : Farmers’ ideas have been firmed -to some extent by the advice tendered to hold their wheat. ’ Many years have passed, since oats wore at such a low price and it is a fortunate set-off that theyields have been so heavy. In addition to weight Of crop, quality is exceptional, very few white oats being other than A grade. To-day fairly substantial parcels were sold at 2s 104 s.i., -for. A’s prompt through, stores, and Jok spread another penny is quoted. This means about 2s. 4d. on trucks. Algerians are quoted at 2s. to 2s. 2d. p. ! i trucks. ■■■•» The home price for peas has slipped* back by 3d a bushel and the price on trucks now range from 6s. 71 to Gs. Bd. Cocksfoot is offering fairly freely and one case of G4d a lb. being j-aid on trucks for a good line - has occurred. Sixpence, however, is the general quotation. Merchants are' net receiving orders to much extent and are not anxiops to operate. Potatoes have moved further , upwards in price. Yesterday a fair amount of business was done at £4 ss, f.o.b. s.i. Crops been freshened by a very -welcome rain, but north of the Rakaia the general opinion is that the long-continued dry weather will seriously effect the weight of crop. An average yield of five to five and ahalf tons is dependent on a good rain, but it is most improbable that last season’s high average of over six tons will be repeated. Onions are weaker. Last year was a good one for the onion grower, but this year is. the reverse. To-day they came back to £3 ss. a ton for prompt and £3 for spread delivery.
