While reports indicate that there is a scarcity of homes in other quarters of the Dominion, Palmerston North enjoys the distinction of having ample accommodation for the reception ot newcomers and those just launching out on the sea of matrimony. This position, serious perhaps for houseowners, has been created by the building programme adopted by the Railway Department and the consequent mushroom .growth of the Mllson settlement, consisting of some seventy dwellings. The trend of a fair proportion of the population in this direction has been accompanied by a reduction in rentals elsewhere, but it must not be thought that this means that Palmerston North is over-built. Inquiries made by a “Times" reporter yesterday elicited the information that there is at present a big inquiry for house properties of four and live rooms, and at rentals ranging from 25s to 30s. So keen is the demand, in fact,' that one estate agent remarked that if he had twenty such dwellings on his hands, he could dispose ot thorn to-morrow.
