MANY DRUG ADDICTS IN NEW YORK

The narcotic bureau of the Police Department announced that there are approximately 15,000 drug addicts In New York. Thoro wore 2689 arrests in 1926, 90 per cent, of whom had criminal records ranging to homlcida • Only ten per cent of users or narcotics are women. A group of millionaire financiers arrange tho importation of drugs to America and theso arc very much adulterated and are sold to the addicts at exorbitant prices. Heroin sells at 35 dollars an ounce and cocaine at 40 dollars an ounce in the streets of tho city. The use of drugs is by no means limited to criminals. Many persons of high social standing, well educated and possessing notable intellectual attributes are among the addicts. The report concludes- by stating that misdirected curiosity is tho most frequent cause of the drug habit.. . . S)
