A PINE COLLECTION. There is now on view in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Stafford street, Feilding a remarkably fine collection of original oil paintings and water-colours, by British, Continental and Colonial artists, many of whom have exhibited in the Royal Academy and Royal Institute of Painters in Water-colours. The pictures show a wide range or subjects: namely, t seapieces, landscapes, figures, street, and Venetian scenes, rich in colour and well painted. The collection is also remarkable for its versatility as regards style, showing pictures of the final detail, school, medium and of the greatest breadth. Outstanding amongst the oils is No. 20, “A Sunny Market ;Day Concarneau,’’ by Sydney L. Thompson, exhibitor in the Royal Academy and Paris Salon. This picture is ■executed almost wholly with . the palette knife and is exceedingly broad and well modelled. The colour is sublime, and the sunlight effect a revelation; The dreamy, tired horse in the foreground is excellently depicted, being, well drawn with remarkable foreshortening. The picture is painted with broad touches of pure colour; every touch in its right .place to produce a grand and truthful effect. No. 9, “Venetian Scenes ■. in ■Water-colours,” by Frank Wasley, known in England as the modern Turner, 'are beautifully painted, showing soft, dreamy atmosphere heightened with touches of fresh and beautiful colour, each touch premeditated and directly placed without any further interference. There are many other fine works in the colour section by good artists., which space* will not permit to enumerate, among them being P. Vander Velden.B. Fletcher, and A. G. Gould, R.B.A. \ Besides this feast of cultured art, there. is an excellent display of original etchings, mezzotint and stipple engravings, both in black and white and in colour. These call for special attention being executed chiefly by the Royal Academicians, members of the Royal Society of Etchers, and old masters. Amongst the artists represented, there arc a number of famous names, including Leslie Ward, R.E., Hugh Paton, R.E., D. Woolard, A.R.E. F. Bartolozzi (1725), P. W. Tompkins (1760), E. Scrivener (1775), William Ward, R.a;, of the eighteenth century and many others of great reputation. Taking the exhibition as a whole, it is one of the most versatile and artistic ever shown here and offers an exceptionally rare opportunity to all lovers to avail themselevs of the invitation to view them, while the works arc an object lesson to art students. The collection has been brought hero by Mr. M. McCormick, who is acting as agent for the different artists represented, and who is giving exhibitions throughout the Dominion.
