EFFECT OF FORTY-FOUR HOUR WEEK
INQUIRY IN AUSTRALIA.
[By Electric Cable —Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cablo Association.] (Received Tuesday, 7.35 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Dec. 14. The inquiry into the effects of the forty-four hour week is drawing to a close. Counsel for the various respondents, addressing the Arbitration Court, argued that the productivity of Australia had so far increased as to warrant a reduction of the hours of labour ,and to render any loss caused thereby unimportant. The other side contended that this was completely refuted by facts, and that the country’s financial and economic condition did not warrant such a reduction, but would gravely retard the development of primary industries, and handicap competition in the world’s markets.
