A heap of rubbish in the -washhouse of Mr. R. Palmer’s residence in West street, caught fire yesterday afternoon, and was responsible for the Fire Brigade being summoned. The fire was put out before any damage was done, and the services of the Brigade were not. required. To-morrow night the Waituna West school concert will be held in the local hall. The funds are in aid of the prize funds, and a good programme is promised. A dance will follow the concert.

A grand concert will be given in the Cheltenham Hall to-night in aid of the hall funds, by a party of Foilding amateurs. A one-act play, entitled “A Helping Hand,” will bo given by Mr. A. C. T. Brothcrton’s party, and other items will be rendered by Messrs. A. Kingston and H. G. Shakes. A dance will be held after the concert. St- John’s Sunday School Christmas tree for children on the cradle roll and those attending the Kindergarten School, will be set up in the Parish Hall to-day. The recent Golden offering Sunday conducted by St. John's Church produced the splendid total of £192 19s 7d. This sum is being devoted to meeting the Church’s financial obligations.

"The late Mr. Haybittle was one w'ho has been associated with St. John’s Church from its earliest days, Mr. Haybittle was a man who was highly respected by the whole community and deservedly so, for he was one who took the keenest interest in all movements that were for the good of the district, and was every ready to give of his time, his talents and hiS'-money to help on any good or deserving cause. Ho was a true member of the Church, a faithful attender as long as his health permitted, and up to the last a regular communicant. For years, he served on the Vestry of St. John's, and for many years, too, he acted as lay-reader. His life was a long and active one; his end was peace. To those left to mourn his loss we extend our sincerest sympathy.”
