MISS HOOK OF HOLLAND
GAINING POPULARITY. That the Palmerston North Operatic Society's latest venture, "Miss Hook of Holland" is increasing in popularity was evidenced by the packed house, which for the second time, applauded the efforts of the Society last night. The weaknesses associated with the lirst night's production were conspicuous by their absence, and all the characters were more confidently portrayed. particularly by the princapls. in addition to tile direction of the comedy, the hand of the master was also visible in the conducting of the orchestra which added in no small measure to the pleasure of the entertainment. The Society arc indeed fortunate in having obtained tho services of such n, capable producer us Mrs. Hulmc and a conductor of Air. A. J. Graham’s standard.
Concerning the principals, it is again hard to individualise, but Miss Naomi Whalloy’s charming portrayal of Miss Hook, and the manner in which Messrs. G. Remington and B. J. Jacobs delineated the chief comedy roles drew roars of laughter from the audience. Miss Arini Ashworth, as Mina is also worthy of special mention, her singing and light comedy earning well merited applause on frequent occasions. The comedy goes with a swing from start to finish and with a precision seldom scon in an amateur performance. There arc still three nights of the season left and the public would bo well advised to avail themselves ot the opportunity of seeing Palmerston’s operatic talent at work. Professional companies have drawn largo houses with poorer talent and inferie- shows.
